Metals
Throughout the world of Aethyr, mplenty of minerals can be found, each possessing unique properties.

Starhaven Metal
A rare and coveted material, Starhaven Metal is easily recognized by its dark hue and distinctive rippling patterns that shimmer across its surface.
Renowned for its exceptional durability and unique magical responsiveness, it also possesses dynamic properties that allow it to be combined with other metals, though not without controversy, as most smiths will consider this a weakening of the primary ore.

Starhaven Metal originates from fragments of the shattered moon, Cressida, which often fall to the planet as celestial debris. These remnants are rare and valuable, making the metal one of the most prized materials known.

Primarily used in high-status armor and weapons, Starhaven Metal is also reserved for the most meaningful elements of attire, such as Unity bands and ceremonial rings. Its presence in an item signifies prestige, power, and deep personal significance.

While many traditional smiths refuse to "taint" Star Metal with lesser materials, believing such blending diminishes its worth and weakens the material, others, particularly among less affluent Clans or individuals, may choose to mix it with other metals. This yields a more affordable product, though it lacks the characteristic ripple pattern, glitter effect, and magical luster of pure or refined Star Metal.

A unique trait of Starhaven Metal is its ability to attune its coloration to the wearer's natural palette, something no other metal can replicate. This effect is a result of its interaction with draconic magic and elemental resonance. Forging it to this level of attunement requires the precision of a skilled Solar dragon’s flame, paired with the wearer’s own elemental influence during the smithing process.

Yellow Crystals
The rarest of all crystals, these are said to house the spirits of the Ancestors.
Well guarded due to how coveted they are, these crystals can only be found in the Celestial Order's sanctum, or in the wild with a streak of good luck.
They allow the user to commune with their Ancestors and receive their wisdom.

White Crystals
Used for lighting.
These crystals are quite standard and abundant in the world, and lack any special properties besides reacting to a dragon's element or magic.
When powered, they offer a steady light source that is much better than candles or torches.

Soul Crystals

When the Soulweaver dragons first emerged, they showed an extraordinary dedication to understanding the full breadth of their elemental powers. Sensitive by nature and profoundly influential in the lives of others, they approached their abilities with deep reverence and curiosity.

Through relentless experimentation and spiritual exploration, the Soulweavers uncovered a remarkable phenomenon: the ability to crystallize a fragment of the soul into a physical form. Thus were born soul crystals, diamond-shaped shards of pure soul energy.

These crystals granted dragons an uncanny ability to delay death. Upon the destruction of the body, the soul would transfer to the crystal, remaining intact and conscious for a duration equal to the dragon’s natural lifespan. In effect, this doubled the soulbearer’s existence, unless the crystal was sustained by feeding on the life force of other creatures. When used in such a way, soul crystals became not only dangerous relics but potentially lethal tools in the wrong hands.

For centuries, the method behind their creation, called soul slicing, was kept secret by the Soulweavers. But during the catastrophic First War, the knowledge was revealed to the world. With the survival of entire nations at stake, even the most sacred truths were shared. The ability for seasoned warriors and sages to pass on knowledge after death proved too valuable to withhold.

In time, soul crystals came to symbolize the Celestials themselves. Though the Soulweavers were the first to craft them, dragons across the realms revered this power as a divine gift, proof of the Celestials' influence and favor.
However, soul slicing is far from simple. The process is deeply taxing, physically, mentally, and spiritually, and is not recommended for sentient beings who are too young or emotionally unstable. Ideally, only a trained Soulweaver dragon should perform the ritual. In emergencies, however, any dragon may attempt it, provided they possess extensive magical knowledge and have practiced on non-sentient creatures first.

When successful, the procedure is seamless. But when it fails, the consequences can be catastrophic. The most feared result is a Soul Burst, a violent, rapid expansion of soul energy that occurs when the attempt backfires or when a soul crystal is physically shattered. The resulting explosion can destroy an entire town or even a city, depending on the strength of the soul involved. If the soul is old or weakened, the burst may be no more than a flicker, but in the case of powerful dragons, the effect can be devastating.

Lesser consequences of a failed soul slicing may include psychological distress such as depression, headaches, or memory loss, and physical symptoms like chest pain. In the worst cases, the procedure can lead to complete madness.

Soul crystals are easily recognized by their distinct color and glow, always mirroring the eye color or elemental hue of the soul they contain. This unique trait has only strengthened the old saying, "The eyes are the windows to the soul."
